The story
In Benin, a descendant of one of history's most notorious slave traders publicly confronts the legacy of her own family. But when Martine de Souza unexpectedly becomes second-in-command of the powerful de Souza dynasty, she is forced to choose between protecting a legacy built on slavery or challenging it from within. Told through mesmerising Vodu ceremonies in which the enslaved return from the dead to possess the living, A Stranger Has No Eyes is a formally adventurous meditation on the contradictions of colonialism, shining a light on ways in which power, memory, belief and identity continue to shape the present.
