The story
Despite their long history of contact with white people, dating back to the 16th century, the Maxakali have maintained their language and a degree of autonomy from the national society. Many Maxakali elders, shamans, and leaders state that their strength derives from the relationships they maintain with their "Yãmiy", their spirits.
